But What About When
It’s One of Your Friends?

Here is something most of us are guilty of: Holding our friends to a different standard than we do total strangers. A friend of mine is a cave diving instructor in north-central Florida. By all accounts, he’s a fairly decent one. In fact, about his only major failing was that he, too, was addicted to the noxious weed.

There is a story going around about this guy that I’ve never verified; however, I have to admit, it sounds fairly credible. Supposedly, when teaching at Peacock Springs State Recreation Area, my buddy would surface mid-dive at a place called Olsen Sink.

He’d then declare a five-minute surface interval, open his light canister and pull out a pack of weeds. When finished with his smoke, the cigarettes and lighter would go back in his battery pack, and he continued the dive.

Strictly speaking, this is not a violation of any training standard I’m aware of. However, given the risks involved, it falls on cave diving instructors to go out of their way to set an example of a healthy life style — something my friend apparently did not do.
