In-Line Follies
The passenger and I proceeded to the back deck. I picked up his regulator’s primary second stage, pointed to a metal object located between the second stage and the low-pressure hose and asked, “Do you know what this is?”
The diver shook his head and said, “No.”
“It’s called an in-line adjustment tool,” I continued. “Your service technician uses it to adjust second-stage valve seat height. He wasn’t supposed to leave it there, however.”
I removed the adjustment tool from the regulator and held it up to the light. “Do you see the size of the hole you were trying to breathe through yesterday?” I asked.
The passenger nodded. I reassembled the regulator (minus the adjustment tool), turned on the air and asked the diver to breathe from it. “Is that any better?” I inquired.
“Hell, yes!” was the only response the diver could give. (He went on to have a much better dive than the previous day.)
