Will It Ever Change?
Eventually, yes. The question is merely when and how.
- The reason companies such as Mares and AquaLung have had difficulty doing so up until now is that they have been going it alone. If manufacturers were to get together, say, through DEMA and decide that, from a certain date forward, they will all begin implementing a more modern approach to BC inflation that is common in design, use and interchangeability, they might actually get somewhere.
- Manufacturers still need to address the oral inflation issue. True, divers seldom use oral inflation. Nevertheless, in an emergency, a potential rescuer should not have to hunt for a soda-straw-size oral inflation tube that is tucked away in a non-obvious pocket.
- Whatever new design manufacturers ultimately come up with, it is going to have to offer significant benefits over what we use today (which, quite frankly, isn’t all that bad).
Until that day arrives, manufacturers who try to go it alone when it comes to revolutionizing BC inflator design are going to risk being eligible for the Bronze Turkey Award.
