The Benefits of Separation
What the designers of the HUB seem to have missed is that, not only is there no real down side to the fact a conventional BC and regulator system are separate from one another, there are several benefits to this arrangement.
- Keeping these components separate can lead to a scuba unit with less overall bulk.
- Although you can’t pack a separate regulator and BC into a single, self-contained unit as you can with a HUB, these items really need to be transported inside a proper equipment bag, for maximum protection. In this respect, it’s easier to pack a regulator system and BC that are separate from one another.
- Should you encounter a problem with a conventional regulator or BC, you can swap either out for another readily available component. With a unit like the HUB, if one component fails, it renders the entire system unusable.
- It’s much easier to properly rinse, dry and store a conventional BC and regulator system than it is something like the HUB.
In fact, even though the owner’s manual states that users should allow rinsed HUB components to dry thoroughly before tucking them back in their zippered pockets, you know that the average user isn’t likely to do that. (The mold spores of the world must be rejoicing over this one.)
