Is That Japan?
It’s not just divers who suffer from geographical ignorance. If anything, divers are better informed than most. A local whale watch captain told me this one:
Just seven nautical miles off the west coast of Maui is the island of Lana’i. According to the whale watch captain, a woman actually came up to him one day and asked, in total innocence, “Is that Japan?”
“Yes it is, ma’am,” he replied, “and that bright green island just to the north of it (actually Moloka’i), well, that there’s Alaska.”
“Oh,” the woman responded, “I thought there’d be more snow…”
