“I’m Calling You From
the United States”
Managing a company that employs over two dozen dive instructors and boat captains often means that, while they’re all out diving, you’re the one stuck back at the office answering phones, where three out of four incoming calls would start like this:
“Aloha.”
“Hi. I’m calling you from the United States…”
“You are? No kidding! Well, you’re not going to believe this, but I’m answering you from the United States. Imagine that! Hell, with so much in common, you should really come diving with us, you know…”
Seriously, few things are more annoying than being a US citizen, living in what has been officially part of the United States since 1960, and having your guests make constant references to, “Back in the States…” What is it about Hawai’i that makes people think it’s a foreign country?
Among the most frequent requests at the information desk at Honolulu International come from people wanting to know where to go to exchange their US dollars into Hawai’ian money.
Of course, people were always asking what the local language was. Seriously, many of our customers were flabbergasted to discover that us “natives” spoke English.
