A Visit From the Holiday Turkey
Dive store service departments are busier at some times than they are at others. This time of year, for example, tends to be busy, as divers whose regulators have been sitting all winter want to get their equipment overhauled before summer. Another busy time is early to mid-December, as divers planning a trip over the holidays want to take a freshly serviced regulator with them.
I spent most of last year as manager of a dive store in the Chicago suburbs. It was something I hadn’t done in a while, and I wanted to have recent experience under my belt before launching an on-line magazine for dive retailers this year.
As the Christmas holiday approached, we were actually doing quite well in terms of keeping up with the demand for service. Nearly all our customers had brought their regulators in for service several weeks in advance of their desired pick-up date.
The Monday prior to Christmas, I asked our chief technician how we were doing. After hearing that everything was up to date, I replied, “Just wait — there is always someone who will show up at the last minute.” Of course, by saying this, I was only tempting fate.
