Back to Our Story…
I explained to the turkey that, because his regulator was two years overdue for service, it would need a complete overhaul. And, because our service technician was leading a trip over the holidays, there was no way she could get it done in time.
“When are you leaving?” I asked.
“Tomorrow morning,” the turkey replied.
(At this point, I’m trying really hard to keep a straight face. What I wanted to do is jump on the counter and scream, “Just how stupid are you?”)
“Well, if you can’t work on it, can you at least sell me the parts so I can fix it myself?” the turkey asked next.
This forced me to explain that:
- In so far as they are liable for any mistakes an unqualified person might make, equipment manufacturers don’t allow stores to make parts available to anyone other than factory-authorized technicians.
- Even though it was his second stage that was leaking, the culprit was most likely a damaged or worn first-stage high-pressure seat. Thus, the only practical way to make certain the problem was solved would be to do a complete overhaul.
Which only prompted the turkey to ask:
“Do you know of any place else I might get the parts?”
“That’s the other thing I need to talk to you about…” I said.
